About Ron Niebrugge

Sharing the outdoor world with folks, either here through my photography, or in person through my photo tours and workshops is why I love photography.

It all started in the mid 1970's, at age 12, when Ron's family moved from San Diego to interior Alaska in the area now known as the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. Their move to this vast wilderness developed two passions that have stayed with Ron to this day, his love of the outdoors and his desire to capture the beauty of the natural world in photographs. Taking the ordinary and using beautiful natural light to create the extraordinary has been a passion of Ron’s for many years, and his love for Alaska is readily apparent. Since 1992, Ron and Janine have called Seward, Alaska home.

In 2002, Ron, along with his wife Janine, decided to follow Ron's passion for photography on a full time basis leaving comfortable corporate jobs for the unknown life of a professional photographer. Ron has never looked back!

Ron is pleased to have among his clients such business as National Geographic, Sports Illustrated, Walt Disney World, Smithsonian, National Park Service and U.S. Forest Service, Sony and Ford along with a number of large advertising agencies. Ron’s images have appeared in many books and publications including Sunset, Alaska Magazine, Audubon and Sierra Club Calendars, Country and Fortune Magazine to name a few. Aside from Ron’s own stock photo agency, Niebrugge Images, he is also represented by seven other stock agencies in six countries.

Ron also leads many photo tours both in his home state of Alaska and throughout the US and Antarctica.

When not shooting stock or leading photo tours Ron keeps busy with assignment work; past assignments have taken Ron to remote areas of Kenai Fjords National Park on behalf of the Park Service, up a 3,000 foot mountain covering a mountain race for Runner’s World, into Prince William Sound during the winter for Continental Airlines Magazine, remote areas of the Inside Passage for Four Seasons Tours and the luxury resort property of Ritz-Carlton in Rancho Mirage.

Ron is equally comfortable photographing resort property in a major tourist destination or working with a corporate client as he is working with biologist in remote parts of the world; and he has experience doing both. A business background and MBA with a marketing emphasis help him understand the needs of his clients.

In 2010 we expanded our business and began offering photo tours in our home state of Alaska. Ron takes guests to his favorite places at the best time of year, taking advantage of his many years here as a professional photographer. You can learn much more about these trips at Alaska Photo Tours.

In 2016, Ron and Janine purchased a remote 10 acres in the Tortolita Mountains North of Tucson, Arizona. Ron has created a photography destination for serious photographers with 3 separate photography blinds. We have lodging available for visitors that includes exclusive use of the photo blinds. We see a wide variety of birds and mammals at this remote location, not to mention amazing scenery and night skies. To learn much more, visit: Desert Photo Retreat
